Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge is one of the most popular bridges, not only in London, England but in the whole world. Designed by Sir Horace Jones and engineered by Sir John Wolfe-Barry, the construction of the Tower Bridge started in 1886. After Jones death in 1887, Barry was able to invoke greater artistic freedom than he would have under the original designers' supervision. Construction of the bridge took 8 years, employing 5 major contractors and 432 construction workers. Two massive piers containing over 70,000 tons of concrete were sunk into the river bed to support the construction.

Popularity has increased sense the bridge was first opened, and it is now one of London's best loved landmarks. Tower Bridge, as well as being an excellent piece of architecture, a busy highway across the river Thames, and a high-powered machine that can hoist up and allow tall ships through, is also a tourist attraction that you can visit and for a modest fee in touristy terms and go touring around. The bridge sits almost directly above the Tower Subway, the world's first underground tube railway, which, until the Bridge was opened, was the shortest way to cross the river from Tower Hill to Tooley Street.
