VIKING BRITAIN : A DAY IN YORK & YORK MINSTER
Highlights include:
- Round-trip Train tickets to Historic York
- Sightseeing bus round historic York (hop-on hop-off)
- Visit to York Minster and a FREE city map and information booklet.
Your day starts with a train ride leaving London 's King's Cross Station at 0700 for your scenic journey to the historic City of York, capital of the North. You'll travel through the Midlands passing canals and market towns, then past old mill towns built during the Industrial Revolution before breaking out into the landscape of Yorkshire shaped by dry stone walls and sheep farms - you'll understand why they call it 'God's own country'!
Arriving at York you'll be able to jump on a hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus tour of York, where you'll get a bird's eye view of the City that was once a Viking stronghold! Your hop-on hop-off ticket allows you the freedom to leave and re-join the bus as often as you like throughout the day - there are regular departures all day so you can explore York at your own pace. On your sightseeing tour you'll see the main attractions in York and visit York Minster, the largest Medieval Gothic Cathedral north of the Alps and a treasure house of 800 years of stained glass. Visit the Shambles, one of the best preserved medieval streets in Europe, and the 14th Century Clifford's Tower perched high on a grassy mound. A visit to the Jorvik Viking Centre is a must! Built on the very site where archaeologists uncovered remains of the Viking-age city of Jorvik. Step aboard a 'time capsule' and travel through the reconstruction of a complete Viking settlement.
A bustling market, dark, smoky houses and a busy wharf have all been recreated in accurate detail so you can experience in sight, sound and smell what it was like to live and work in Jorvik with its pungent smells and narrow alleyways!
